Vinoble is proud to import a range of DO Penedes wines Hong Kong. In the north-easternmost regions of Spain, including the provinces of Tarragona and Barcelona, is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. In the 21st Century, Penedès is internationally known for the sparkling wine Cava, and the local hearty reds. Penedès is a DO region, or Denominación de Origen. DO is a step up from vino de la tierra in Spain, and is equivalent to the AOC and DOC is France and Italy. Penedès is divided (and must be labeled as such) between three regions: Baix Penedès, Penedès Central, and Alt Penedès. The proximity to France means that many traditionally French grapes are quite native here, including Chardonnay, which was likely brought by the ancient Phoenicians. The higher regions of Penedès are where the finer white wines are made, due to lower yields and higher altitude. Cava is most commonly produced in Penedès, and likely originated there, and it is made from three grapes: Macabeu, Parellada and Xarel-lo. Cava must be made in the méthode champenoise, like Champagne. While it is often ranked next to Prosecco because of its relatively low cost, the re-fermentation in the bottle gives Cava an added layer of complexity and quality. Popular grapes in Penedès include Macabeo, Parellada, Xarel-lo, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, and Carignan (Cariñena). Most of the wine produced in Penedès is white, though the reds are well regarded. The largest bodega is Bodega Torres. Penedès wine makers have a reputation for being forward thinking, and the region was one of the first in Europe to aggressively adopt stainless steel and temperature control, and this blend of tradition and modernization has led to their reputation for quality.
